“Know all men by these Presents that we Samuel Vanhook & Nathan Rawlings are held and firmly bound unto his Excellency the governor of Kentucky or his Successors in the full sum of one hundred pounds to Which payment well & Truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs Excors (Executors) & Administrators Jointly & Severally by these Presents Sealed with our seals & dated this 13 day of May 1794.

The Condition of the above obligation is such that Whereas William Moore Clerk of Harrison County hath this day Issued License for the Marriage of Samuel Vanhook & Hannah Trousdale now if there is no Lawfull Cause to obstruct sd. Marriage Then the above obligation to be void else remain in Power & Virture given under our hands & seals the Date above Written.”

28 Sep 1785 - Petitions of the Early Inhabitants of Kentucky (to the General Assembly of Virginia 1769 to 1792), Petition No. 26 – Samuel VanHook signed a petition of the inhabitants of Lincoln County requesting a town for the county. This was the request for the formation of the town of Harrodsburg. (This petition is also signed by Samuel Dennis, who owned land next to Samuel's original preemption, and Samuel Dennis Junior, among others. There is a reproduction of this particular petition in the Filson Club publication covering these petitions.)

We do hereby Certify that Samuel Vanhook junr is entitled to the preemption of Four hundred acres of land at the State price in the District of Kentucky On Account of making an Actual Settlement in the Month of March 1779 lying about one & a half Miles North East of the Buffalo Road leading from Riddles Station to the lower blue licks & about five Miles from the said Station. Given under our hands at Bryants Station on Elkhorn Creek this 17th day of January 1780.

[Summons document - shown below] The Commonwealth of Virginia to the Sheriff of Bourbon county Greeting You are hereby commanded to take Azor Rees if he be found within your Baliwick and him safely keep so that you have his body before the Justices of our said county court at the Courthouse thereof On the thrd Tuesday in February next to answer Saml Vanhook & Margaret his Wife of a plea of Trespass Assault and Battery Damages Two hundred pounds.
