From 1884 onwards, Ephraim Neavill appears in the California Voters Rolls in Los Angeles County - apparently he had gone there to live with his daughters, while his wife Catherine moved to Missouri to live with her son Franklin Heaton.

Ephraim Neavill served in Dowling's Company of Illinois Volunteers during the Black Hawk (Indian) War. His widow Catherine filed for his pension 11 Jun 1894.

Friday, 26 Feb 1869 Paper: Daily Iowa State Register (Des Moines, Iowa) Volume: VIII Issue: 50 Page: 1 - District Court notes:
"Sarah VanHook vs John W VanHook - the defendant fails to answer or plead - default entered against him."

Tuesday, 2 Mar 1869 Paper: Daily Iowa State Register (Des Moines, Iowa) Volume: VIII Issue: 53 Page: 1 - District Court notes:
"Sarah VanHook vs John VanHook, being an application for divorce. The decree grants the divorce and allows the plantiff the custody of the three minor children."

John and Sarah were divorced in Iowa in 1869 and Sarah emarried twice after that - first to a "J.N. Young" in 1869 (about a month after Sarah's divorce to John was final), who she must have divorced quickly (or he died quickly) as we find her as "S.A. Young" in the 1870 census with her children. In 1874 she married for a 3rd time to "Harrison Groves." John VanHook never remarried.

Following from "The Diary of Mrs. Emily Milner VanHook Middleton"
by Emily Milner VanHook Middleton; Tia Templeton Atwood; Edna Davis Hawkins - OCLC:14388514 (copy in Dallas Public Library). Following extracts from posting on Genforum by Pat Bunch, 14 Feb 2006:

(note: Emily W. Milner was married to Augustin VanHook, the first cousin of Solomon VanHook. All of them migrated from North Carolina to Texas about 1852. Augustin VanHook died in the 1860's, and Emily remarried to a Mr. Middleton in the 1870's.)

Friday, August 29, 1858 - Since last Monday many inportant changes have taken place. On Monday was sent for to visit the little Charlie who was attacked with spasma in the afternoon and died about midnight, leaving his father inconsolable for his loss. Doubtless the dispensation was intended for some wise purpose and I hope we may all profit by the lesson. Returned from Cousin Sol's on Wednesday morning

Saturday, January 28, 1860 - Called yesterday at Cousin Sol's, found Cousin Elisa no better, brought home more clothes to make for the babe.

Wednesday, February 08, 1860 - Went yesterday to visit Cousin Eliza who is said to be declining rapidly in consumption. She has not been advised of her condition.

Friday, February 10, 1860 - Intended going to Cousin Sol's this morning but was disappointed by the horses being turned out.

Wednesday, February 22, 1860 - Have visited Cousin Eliza several times during this interval but was not aware of the rapidity with which she was sinking till Friday last when I was sent for in haste, and found her struggling in the agonies of death from which death released her at 1/2 past 9 o'clock p.m. leaving her husband and little children inconsolable.

Tuesday, February 28, 1860 - Since Cousin Eliza's death in fact, while she was in corps in the house prevailed on Cousin Sol to send for Anna and Mr. Sweatman and they have made arrangements to live together for the present, but Thomas is still not reconciled.

Monday, November 09, 1868 - Rose early, helped Anna do the chores and as I was ready to sit down to work, Mr Arden requested a private interview with me in which he informed me of the engagement of marriage which existed between him and Anna and ask my consent to the union, I gave it hartily and now suppose it will be consumated soon, Cousin Sol who left on Friday last quite unwell has become much worse since and this morning a messegner came for Anna and she and Mr. Arden and Otho accompained the boy back, I feel some suspence fearing his illness will terminate fatally.

(note: the above paragraph refers to Henry Arden, Emily's neighbor, that was planning to marry Anna (Annie) E. VanHook. Henry was a widower and already had children Otho, Julius and Thomas by his first wife. He and Annie had a son John shortly after they were married)

Wednesday, November 11, 1868 - Mr. Arden returned this morning after having sat up with Cousin Sol during the night, left him gradually sinking.

Friday, November 14, 1868 - Yesterday Anna sent a messenger to inform me of her pa's death that morning and requesting me to come immediately and bring the children. Having no carriage I went on horse- back, Mr. Sutherland carrying Tommie in his lap and Julie riding behind Freeman. Arrived about dark found Laura, Mattie and to my suprise and gratification found Thomas VanHook who had not spoken to me for more that three years, nor to Anna since her marriage some 8 years ago. All seemed willing to forget past animosities and to reunite in our former friendship. So I say Amen. The corpse was buried in the presence of several neighbors and friends late in the afternoon. Mr. Sutherland and lady spent the night with us, but Mr. Sutherland was quite sick during the night.
