"Mrs. U.S. VanHook was murdered by an unknown person at her residence in Jackson, Tenn., at half past 9 on Sunday morning by blows on her head with a hatchet. She had just sent her children to Sabbath school, and was alone in her chamber reading. She had in her bureau five hundred dollars, which is supposed to be the incentive to the murder, but the assasin failed to find it. Her residence is near the center of Jackson, and persons were passing in the street at the time."
