    Notes
    Married:
    • Martin VanHook, son of Samuel VanHook and Isabella Cox was born about 1836 in Pulaski County, Kentucky. Martin was a farmer in that county. In 1873, when Martin's father's estate was settled, he received the old homestead and 30 acres where his mother was living at the time [Pulaski Co., Ky. Deeds, volume 27, page 297].

From Martin's military records we find he was six feet tall, blue eyed, and blond. His health must have been poor for the last 15 years of his life.

Martin served as a sergeant in Company G of the 19th Regiment Kentucky Infantry (Captain Lincoln A. Hamblin's company) with the Union forces during the Civil War. He enlisted 1 November 1861 at Camp Harrod, Ky., and gave his age at that time as 24 years. He was mustered in at Harrodsburg on 2 January 1862, and was present with his company until 2 April 1862. After that time he was absent, sick in Pulaski Co., and never rejoined his company. Beginning 16 February 1863 he was on detached duty at the Exchange Barracks in Lousiville. When mustered out with his regiment 26 January 1865 at Louisville, he was still due $100 for extra pay as a hospital steward from 22 September 1864 until 12 January 1865 (by S.O. No. 1 from Lt. Col. Farleigh, commander at Louisville, Ky.) On 20 June 1864 he made a trip to Cairo, Ill., and returned to New Albany, Ind. His age at muster out is given as 26 (so he lost a couple of years somewhere). Rather unusally, his discharge is recorded in the Pulaski County deed books.

Martin married Rebecca C. Thompson, daughter of George and Sophia M. Thompson, in Pulaski County on 24 March 1874 [marriage bonds, book 9, pages 230-231]. This was the first marriage for both of them, Martin was 37 at the time and Rebecca was 24. Rebecca was born 5 August 1849 in Virginia and had moved to Kentucky with her parents. The surety on the bond was Samuel Bishop, Martin's brother-in-law (husband of his sister Frances). They were married at P.R. Cassle's house, and the married was witnessed by him along with John A. Gooch, B.L. Gooch and others. The marriage was performed by Wilson S. Gooch.

George Thompson, Rebecca's father, was born in Virginia 2 June 1809 and died in Pulaski Co., Ky., 7 Jul 1880. His wife Sophia M. was born 14 October 1810 and died 27 August 1868. They are buried beside each other in the Christian Church Cemetery (Science Hill Cemetery) at Science Hill, Ky., in Pulaski Co.

Martin and Rebecca had one daughter, Lela J., born 28 March 1876. About a year and a half after the birth of his daughter, Martin died of consumption on 3 October 1877. He is buried in the Higgins cemetery on Bull Road in Pulaski Co., Ky. This is the same burial place as his brother James Perry VanHook. He has a regular military grave marker as his tombstone, which states "Sergeant Martin VanHook, 19th Kentucky Infantry".

Martin's widow Rebecca, married again on 25 July 1880 to James F. Muncy in Pulaski Co. [marriage bonds, book 14, page 194]. This marriage took place on a Sunday at Rebecca's house. The witnesses were Mathew Floyd and William VanHook (Rebecca's brother-in-law), and they were married by Jerry Goodwin. James F. Muncy was a farmer from Fayette Co., Ky. He was born in Virginia and was 61 years old at this time. This was also his second marriage.

Rebecca's father was living with her in 1880 just before he died. Rebecca died 17 February 1884, and she was buried with her parents at Science Hill. Her tombstone has her name as Rebecca Vanhook, not Muncy. The daughter of Martin and Rebecca was Lela J., b. 28 March 1876. She married Albert E. Allen, a teacher, on 12 December 1899 in Pulaski Co. [marriage bonds, book 29, pages 226-227]. They were married by William A. Borcum.
