      Pulaski Co., Ky. Deeds - Volume 17, pages 208-209 - Power of Attorney, Aaron VanHook to George VanHook:

      Know all men that I have this day and do hereby nominate, appoint and constitute my son George Vanhook my true and lawful attorney to claim, demand, sue for and secure all such parts and positions of the estate which was by the last will and testament of Lawrance (sic) Vanhook deceased his son Aaron or his children (who departed this life about the year 1801 in the county of Caswell and State of North Carolina) that the object of this Power be more fully understood and defined it is the object and intention of the undersigned who is one of the children and heirs at law of Aaron Vanhook whose name appears in said will, to authorize and direct my said attorney to attend to the business and collect all such parts and portions of the estate of said Testator as was devised by said will in the third clause or Section thereof to Zacheriah (sic) Jones and Elizabeth his wife who have both sometime since departed this life without having any issue either during their Joint or separate lives and that the true intent and design of this power of attorney be more clearly understood a reference is here made to a certified copy of said will which was certified by the clerk of County Court aforesaid the 7th day of October 1853 and which copy and certificate are made parts of this power of attorney and my said attorney is hereby fully and completely authorized and empowered to demand, sue for and receive all such slaves hire money rents goods and chattels and all other things which may be due and coming to me as one of the children and heirs at law of said Aaron Vanhook who was one of the sons and devisees of said Lawrence Vanhook deceased and my said attorney is fully authorized to Employ counsel institute carryon or compromise all such suits for the recovery said money, slaves, hire lands rents goods and chattels as he may deem necessary and important for the accomplishment of the end and business herein named my said attorney is further authorized and empowered to execute any receipts for one and in my name to institute all such suits and to carry them though all the inferior and supreme courts of the Commonwealth is anywhere else the said property or any of the same may be found and to do and transact any and all other things he may choose in the premises as fully as I could as were I personally present acting and doing for myself and I hereby fully and to all interests and purposes confirm whatever my said attorney may do in and about said business.

      This Deed of bargain, sale and conveyance made and entered into this 5th day of Feb., 1869, by and between the following named parties, Heirs and Legatees of Aaron Vanhook, deceased, viz:

      George Vanhook, Jonathan Langford, Elizabeth Langford late Elizabeth Vanhook, John Vanhook, William Vanhook, Sarah Baker late Sarah Vanhook, W.H. Dykes, Ellen Dykes later Ellen Vanhook, and David Vanhook, all of the County of Pulaski and State of Kentucky, of the first part, and Stephen Silvers of the County and State aforesaid of the second part, Witnesseth,

      That for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and thirty dollars, to them in hand paid and secured to be paid, the receipt of which they do hereby acknowledge, Jonathan Langford having purchased the interest Frances Raney, late Frances Vanhook and obtained her conveyance, the parties of the 1st part hath this day bargained and sold unto the party of the 2nd part, all their undivided interest in and to their father's lands, Aaron Vanhook, deceased, belonging to him at the time of his decease, the same is situated in the County and State aforesaid on the waters of the Mud Lick Valley, the waters of Buck Creek, contained in three tracts, to wit,

      1st tract Patented to Aaron Vanhook on the 5th day of July, 1846, containing 127 acres and bounded as followeth, to wit, Beginning at a beech and sugar tree, Polly Boyd's corner, and running thence, S14 degrees W56 poles to a white oak and chestnut, S60 degrees E52 poles to a white oak, S34 poles to a white oak, S60 degrees E42 poles to a beech and white oak, N56 degrees E42 poles to a white oak, S55 E75 poles to a black walnut, N57 degrees, E28 poles to a beech, N100 to a stake, N69 W175 poles to a stake, S29 degrees, W25 poles to a sugar tree and black oak bush on Boyd's Branch, N81 degrees W21 poles to a sycamore, S85 W14 poles to a white walnut, S36 degrees, W8 poles to the Beginning.

      3rd tract containing 200 acres Patented to same the 21st day of December, 1849 and situated in County, State and waters aforesaid, and bounded as followeth, to wit, Beginning at a beech, Aaron Vanhook's most easterly corner to 127 acre survey, thence S44 degrees W74 poles to a white oak on top of a ridge, S36 degrees W110 poles to three chestnut oaks near the top of a ridge, S54 degrees E10 poles to a chestnut oak and pine corner to C. Wait's 2,000 acre survey, thence his line N87 degrees E130 poles to 3 small pines and chestnut standing on top the cliff and at the edge of the same, N45 degrees E50 poles to two chestnut oaks, S60 degrees E25 poles to a white oak, N25 E65 poles to two large pines and chestnut, N7 W60 poles to 2 spotted oaks, S80 degrees E14 poles to a chestnut oak and white oak S10 degrees E80 poles to two white oaks, N15 degrees W20 poles to a black oak and white oak, beginning to a 100 acre survey of George Vanhook, N86 W105 poles to a stake, N60 degrees W93 poles to a stake S72 degrees W54 poles to a stake in Aaron Vanhook's line of his old survey, thence his line S69 degrees E117 pole to a stake, thence his line due S100 poles to the Beginning, containing in all 427 acres together with all and singular its improvements and appurtenances, thereunto belonging,

      To Have and To Hold the aforesaid undivided interests hereby conveyed unto the party of the 2nd part, his heirs, assigns &c forever, and said parties of the 1st part bind themselves severally to warrant and forever defend the title to the aforesaid undivided interests against the claim of themselves, their heirs and assign to and against the claim or claims of all and every person claiming in anyway whatsoever, which was their right of inheritance legally descending from their father Aaron Vanhook, deceased, all except the interest represented by J. Langford, his is by purchase.

      In Witness Whereof, the said parties of the 1st hath hereunto set their names and affixed their seals the day and date first above written.

      I, E.D. Porch, Clerk of the County Court of the County aforesaid, do certify that the foregoing Deed was on the 5th day of March, 1869, produced to Buford Woodall my deputy at the residence of Sarah Vanhook in said County and acknowledged and delivered by George Vanhook, Jonathan Langford, Elizabeth Langford, John Vanhook, William Vanhook, Sarah Baker, David Vanhook, Ellender Dykes, William H. Dykes, thereto to be their act and deed in due form of law and that on the 20th day of March, 1869, produced to me in my office and acknowledged by John Baker thereto to be his act and deed, which Deed is stamped with Internal Revenue Stamp of the denomination of fifty cents and that I have recorded it and this Certificate in my said office.

      Witness my hand this 27th day of March, 1869.
