      Following entries from "Minutes of the Common Council of the City of New York, 1784-1831, Volume 2"

      Apparently Arent Van Hook took over as jailor ("gaoler") from Thomas Hazard in late 1796. Hazard replaced Arent as jailor in fall of 1797.

      Page 310 - 15 Dec 1796 - "Ordered that Mr. Recorder issue his Warrants on the Treasury to pay Arent Van Hook for Watchmen at Gaol: ¹31 and 17 shillings."

      PP. 314-315 - 28 Dec 1796 - "On a suggestion that the Goalor extorts from Debtors confined in Goal unreasonable Compensation for indulgencies in the Use of certain Rooms in the Goal Aldermen Bayard, Roosevelt & Delamontagnie were appointed a Committee to enquire into the subject & report to the Board." (findings of this committee, if any, are unknown)

      Page 319 - 13 Jan 1797 - "Ordered that Mr. Mayor issue his Warrants on the Treasury to pay Arent Van Hook for subsisting criminal prisoners: ¹185, 4 shillings, 8 pence."

      Page 330 - 13 Mar 1797 - "Ordered that Mr. Mayor issue his Warrants on the Treasury to pay Arent Van Hook, Gaoler for subsisting criminal prisoners in January and February last: ¹231 and 9 shillings."

      Page 340 - 28 Apr 1797 - "Ordered that Mr. Mayor issue his Warrants on the Treasury to pay Arent Van Hook Gaoler for subsisting criminal Prisoners: ¹110, 19 shillings and 1 pence."

      Page 353 - 29 May 1797 - "Ordered that Mr. Mayor issue his Warrants on the Treasury to pay Arent Van Hook for subsisting criminal Prisoners: ¹35."

      Page 358 - 26 Jun 1797 - "Ordered that Mr. Mayor issue his Warrants on the Treasury to pay Arent Van Hook for subsisting criminal Prisoners in Gaol: ¹24 and 16 shillings."

      Page 380 - 28 Aug 1797 - "Ordered that Mr. Mayor issue his Warrants on the Treasury to pay Aront Van Hook for subsisting criminal prisoners: ¹70 and 16 shillings."
      Arent is described as an "Dutch Reformed clergyman of the old Holland Dutch stock" in notes about his son William in the Throckmorton genealogy.

      "Died - On Monday evening, in the 49th year of his age, after a fevere and painful illness, which he bore with great fortitude, Mr. Arondt Van Hook. He was an affectionate husband, a tender parent, a true friend to his country, and to the poor a generous friend."

      page 37 - "The first public reading room in America was established by Adrien Van Hook, the owner of a tanyard in Gold Street, in the Swamp." "It was," says the "Farmers' Weekly Museum" of January 7, 1799, "sufficiently encouraged during his lifetime, but upon his unfortunate decease was closed, to the regret of lovers of literature."
